Malachi Alexander
I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Mathematics at University of California, Santa Cruz. I intend to contribute to the growing body of knowledge in mathematics, bridging of abstract mathematical ideas, and construction of equitable education opportunities.
Research
My current advisor is Dr. Junecue Suh. I have been tasked with computing the lower and upper simplicial volume entropy for Iwahori subgroups over non-Archimedean local fields. As an undergraduate, I participated in research in mosaic knot theory (under Dr. Jennifer McLoud-Mann) and zero sets of systems of polynomials (under Dr. Maurice Rojas). I also joined the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC) Scholars program at CSUMB and received Honorable Mention for the Barry Goldwater Scholarship.
Teaching and Outreach
I am passionate about teaching, specifically, honing my skills as an educator and making content more accessible to a larger range of students. At CSUMB, I served as an instructional student assistant for three years working with remedial math students and even participated in programs for middle school and high school students, including Imagine College, Chevron’s STEM Zone, Graniterock Algebra Academy, and GEAR-UP. I returned to CSUMB after graduating as a lecturer to teach courses such as Finite Mathematics, Precalculus and Calculus for two years. At UC Santa Cruz, I have worked primarily as a TA in wide range of courses, from College Algebra and Calculus to Introduction to Proof Writing and Combinatorics.
